Facebook is a popular online social networking platform. Social networking or web 2.0 means that content can be determined by the user. Why do we need this? Well, simply put – users like power. But what is social media really about and what is its importance and purpose in the real world.

Facebook launched in February 2004. At the time the founders did not know what exactly they had created and almost 10 years later we are still trying to answer this riddle. Essentially it is a platform that connects you to people everywhere and this is where the value lies. The internet has fundamentally shifted the way we communicate. A third of the world’s population is on the internet and one out of every seven minutes users are logged onto Facebook. Why?

Facebook encourages us to share our experiences without friends and the world. The implementation of Facebook Timeline imitates a diary or a journal whereby you can showcase your life’s milestones. You can post images of your latest adventure, display the brands you ‘like’, post upcoming events or boast your achievements. The important point is that others will see the information you share. This distribution of information is the reason why Facebook is so valuable to brands and companies.

Users are more likely to engage with brands that their friends approve. Malorie from Facebook explains that people, “share, read and generally engage more with any type of content when it’s surfaced through friends and people they know and trust.”70% of Facebook news consumers follow links posted by friends or family. It is the preferred vehicle to share information, only second to e-mail. Facebook has now overtaken Yahoo and Google as the number 1 activity online. Since potential consumers are already online, why not engage with them? Listen to their feedback and expand your brand’s reach and awareness. Facebook gives marketers great tools such as Facebook Ads and analytics.

There is a myth that Facebook is only for the youth. This is not the case. The emerging demographic of new users are women between the ages of 45 to 55. They want to connect, share and gossip. Another emerging group are small business owners and marketing directors. 900 million users want to connect, share and like.

Facebook has over 900 million users. Are you one of them?
