People tend to hop online and offline leaving traces of their actions where ever they go. Not many people consider the security measures needed to be taken and the implication of disregarding those measures. At a point security on Facebook was at an all time low, because online users simply didn’t bother to read the security options. Granted back then security on Facebook was weak, but they have since then upgraded and will need to continuously improve security as the web develops.

Screening

Did you know that last year 1 out of every 3 employers rejected candidates after screening them online? Eurocom Worldwide (a global PR network foundation) found in their annual market survey for 2012 that 1 in 5 technology firms have rejected a job applicant based on their social media profile. What does this mean? Companies are looking for you online and digging up your personal profiles and deciding based on this whether you are worthy for the position applied for.

Digital footprints

We should understand that we all have digital footprints. Webopedia.com an online dictionary for words concerning technology, defines the digital footprint:

“On the Internet a digital footprint is the word used to describe the trail, traces or “footprints” that people leave online. This is information transmitted online, such as forum registration, e-mails and attachments, uploading videos or digital images and any other form of transmission of information — all of which leaves traces of personal information about yourself available to others online.”

The only way to ensure your digital footprints are clean is to ensure your security settings on Facebook keep your personal life private. Ensure that there are no dodgy (such as committing illegal acts) pictures of you online. Highly offensive or explicit comments and tweets that may have seemed funny in the past could come back to bite you in the future. Do not try to hide your true personality online, but instead portray the side of yourself a potential employer would not mind working with.
