Building skills for leaders

Communication and leadership skills are pertinent for anybody aiming to become a success and further their careers. At social gatherings a flare in holding interesting conversation will stand you in good stead. In a world where everyone stands on tip-toes to be a head above the rest, good communication and leadership skills are what will give you the advantage every time.

Toastmasters International

Toastmasters International is a non-profit educational organization that hones these valuable skills through their 13 000 clubs in their global network. Meetings are held in stress free environments where members speak and their peers give feedback in order to learn from each other. There are workshops with assignments, presentations, impromptu talks on various topics and meetings are conducted which serve as exercises of timekeeping. Toastmasters headquarters are in California, but they have clubs in 116 countries.

The Pinelands Club

Pinelands Toastmasters Club became a member of Toastmasters International in October 1989 and has been growing in strength ever since. The meetings are held for 2 hour periods and consist of 20 or so members.  Participants gain from the club by participating in the meetings, the speeches and other duties such as timekeeper, grammarian and evaluator.

The club’s vision: “The vision of this club, not only but with Toastmasters worldwide, is to be a Club where members want to come to every meeting and perfect their skills, and to achieve their personal goals and to experience what camaraderie is all about.”

There are many benefits aside from the skills learnt. Networking is fun and easy as the comfortable atmosphere makes it easy to make friends or find future business partners. You may receive criticism from peers, but all for the betterment of your leadership development. To be noticed somewhere you must first put yourself out there.
